Karol W. Joseph Ike-Duninowski

RICHIBUCTO CAPE, NB - Karol W. Joseph Ike-Duninowski passed away peacefully at home at the age of 86 on Friday September 16th, 2022. Born on October 1, 1935 in Warsaw, Poland, he was the son of André Joseph Ike-Duninowski and Maria Julia (Nałecz ) Ike-Duninowski of Duninów and Warsaw, Poland.

During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, Karol served a very important patriotic role as a child underground messenger. At the end of WW2, Karol escaped with his parents to Switzerland where his father worked for many years. During this time Karol attended schools in Lausanne, Delémont and in Basel.

At the age of 21 Karol started his career in Photography at the Basler Kunstgewerbeschuleor ( Art School of Basel ) and Studio Eidenbenz.

In 1961 Karol immigrated to Montreal, Canada and was employed as a commercial photographer at Bomac Montreal Ltd. Later he transferred to Toronto and opened his own studio Karol Ike Inc. working in the Commercial, Fashion and Food industries for all major magazines.

Later Karol naturally transitioned to Cinematography as a Director of Photography in feature films, commercials and many television series.

Karol was also an avid and fearless sailor. He sailed from the Carolinas to the Virgin Islands, The Pacific Ocean and the Northumberland Strait in NB.

Friends of Karol quickly understood and acknowledged that he was a very impressive multi-talented artist and continued to produce work up to as recently as June 2022 with a Photographic Opening and exhibition in Basel Switzerland. He was painter, sculptor, musician, exceptional carpenter, expert furniture restorer and an accomplished linguist. Karol spoke six languages. For many years Karol played the piccolo participating annually in the Basler Fasnacht in Switzerland.

He is survived by his wife, Elena (Kenney) Ike-Duninowski, of Richibucto Cape, NB; his son, André Ike-Duninowski (Anik Watson) of Squamish, BC; two beautiful grandchildren, Tysen Ike-Duninowski and Bianca Ike-Duninowski.

Brothers and sisters-in-law; Dr. Alan and Angela Kenney, Texas, Bruce and Vera ( Kenney) Wood Utah, Valerie ( Kenney ) Horsman, Rexton, Dr. Mark Kenney, Rexton, Dwight Kenney (Dr. Angela Dobson), Saint Margaret’s Bay, NS.

Many cousins in Poland, France and Switzerland.

Nieces and nephews; Jefferey (Kira) Wood, Ryan (Julie) Wood, Samantha (Christopher), Zecopoulos, Veronica (Michael) Goodfellow, Matthew Horsman, Jacob Kenney and Kyra Kenney. Great nieces and nephews; Kylie, Luke, Audrey, Oscar, Palmer.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Mara Straume Ike-Duninowski and daughter, Kristina Ike-Duninowski.

We would like to thank Dr. Eric Martin, Dr. Eve St. Hilaire, Dr. David Bewick, Dr Pierre Verger, Gisele Richard and all the Extra-Mural nurses for their dedicated support.

Visitation will be held at Thompson’s Funeral Home in Richibucto on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm, Monday at 9:00 am until departure for the funeral.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 26, 2022 at 10:30 am, Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Rexton, NB.  Donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church in Rexton, NB, to The Friends of the Moncton Hospital or to the CHU Dumont Foundation.
